The Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) of the Centre for
Research and Technology Hellas
(CERTH), invites applications for two
(2) experienced researchers
in the field of Social Media mining and
understanding. The positions are part of research projects placing
particular emphasis on real-time indexing and understanding of
multimedia content that is shared in online social networking
applications (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.) with the goal of
discovering emerging phenomena and enabling enhanced means of media
content search and consumption.

CERTH-ITI is located in Thessaloniki, Greece
(http://www.iti.gr/iti/contact.html[1]), about 10 km east of the city
centre. ITI is one of the leading Institutions of Greece in the fields
of Informatics, Telematics and Telecommunications, with long
experience in numerous European and national R&D projects. ITI has
participated in more than 50 research projects funded by the European
Commission (IST FP5-FP6) and more than 85 research projects funded by
Greek National Research Programmes and Consulting Subcontracts with
the Private Sector (I&T Industry).

Specifically, experienced researchers are to be recruited for the
following positions:
1. Stream-based data management and mining with interest / experience
in applying data mining approaches in streams of online media content
(news feeds, tweets, images, videos) coming from social networking
applications. Experience in data distribution frameworks (e.g.
MapReduce) and large-scale machine learning problems will be
appreciated.
2. Complex data mining and learning with interest / experience in
employing graph-based models and methodologies for tackling problems
involving heterogeneous data sources of dynamic nature (e.g. photos,
comments, social relations, etc.). Ideally, the candidate should also
have experience in multimedia analysis and machine learning methods.

Candidates must have a PhD or Master of Science in a related field, a
demonstrated record of significant research and the potential to make
substantial contributions as independent investigators. They are
expected to lead relevant research activities (for PhD holders),
develop new research ideas and to interact with the multidisciplinary
research environment of the host research team.

The expected starting date for the positions is in October-November
2011. Competitive salaries will be offered depending on the
qualifications and experience of the applicants. The contract duration
will be initially for one year, with the potential for extension to
two more years (three in total).
