BFA in Video and Sound in Portland

The BFA Program at Pacific Northwest College of Art is currently accepting applications for its new Video and Sound program.

In recognition of the fact that moving images and sound have become central modes of communication and self-expression in the 21st century, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) announces its tenth BFA program, Video and Sound, launching Fall 2012.

The BFA in Video and Sound at PNCA investigates video and sound as disciplines both distinct and allied. Students in this program acquire practice-based media literacy, a multi-modal approach toward video and sound arts, and the critical, aesthetic, and technical skills vital to contemporary cultural production. The principles of video and sound are taught in hands-on learning environments where students focus on gaining technical skills as a means to express ideas through structure, pace, rhythm, and the interplay between image and sound. Emphasis is placed on the making and presenting of single and multi-channel works in a variety of screening and listening environments. To this end, students engage in in-depth research and draw on the rich histories and interconnections between video art, sound art, experimental film and music, installation, performance, and network culture.

"PNCA's Video and Sound program was designed with the acute awareness of this unique moment in media art history," says Video and Sound Chair Stephen Slappe. "Robust, easy-to-use software and relatively affordable equipment have made the means of production readily available to young creators. The Video and Sound program at PNCA offers students a solid conceptual background to deepen the quality of their engagement with these media while facilitating inventive forms of expression and communication. In addition to teaching the technical skills needed to work with video and sound, we encourage students to explore the potential of mobile spectatorship, gaming interfaces, performance strategies, and network culture."

The Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts is awarding some 70 grants, which cover either the course fees together with travel and living costs, or the course fees only.

Highlights of the 2012 course programme include the classes directed by Tania Bruguera (Cuba, USA) with performance, sculpture and video, and Manfred Pernice (Berlin), who is concerned with expanded sculpture. After a three-year break, Katharina Sieverding (Düsseldorf, Berlin), will once again give a photography course, and Arno Brandlhuber (Berlin) will be directing an architecture class. Peter Friedl (Berlin) and Christoph Schäfer (Hamburg) are also teaching in Salzburg this year, as is the documenta participant Shaina Anand together with Ashok Sukumaran (Mumbai), who will deal with video and participatory projects. A first-time visitor here is Olav Westphalen (Hamburg, Stockholm), well known for his cartoon as co-author of Rattelschneck.

The Graphic Arts classes will be directed by Krystyna Piotrowska (Warsaw) and Leya Mira Brandner (São Paulo). Milena Dragicevic (London), Hanspeter Hofmann (Basel), Matts Leiderstam (Stockholm), Mara Mattuschka (Vienna) and Katrin Plavcak (Berlin) will be concerned with painting and related topics. Lin Cheung (London) is teaching the class in jewellery design. Again, Maria Lind (Stockholm)—this time in collaboration with Juan A. Gaitan (Rotterdam)—is holding a one-week course on curatorial practice, which is also the subject of the curatorial collective WHW/What, How & for Whom, based in Zagreb (Croatia), which was responsible for the 2009 Biennial in Istanbul. Martin Schmidl (Aachen) will concentrate on the fundamentals of drawing practice. Using collage, Christoph Draeger (Vienna, New York) will explore construction, deconstruction and reconstruction in image production.

The course fees are between 450 EUR, and 1070 EUR depending on the length of the course. Grants normally cover the course fees. KulturKontakt Austria, the American Austrian Foundation (AAF), the ERSTE Foundation, Free State of Bavaria and The Münster Academy of Fine Arts also subsidise travel and living costs.

Folklorni ansambl Linđo iz Dubrovnika i Međunarodni institut za promidžbu mira kroz turizam (IIPT - International Institute fot Peace through Tourism) u petak su u Dubrovniku potpisali Sporazum o suradnji na promociji mira, međusobnog razumijevanja i suradnji među ljudima i narodima svijeta. 

Potpisivanjem ovog sporazuma FA Linđo dobio je počasni naslov IIPT Ambasador mira. Ovaj sporazum imat će veliku ulogu za razvoj kulturne razmjene, poboljšanja dobrosusjedskih odnosa, zaštitu kulturne baštine te promociju kulture, posebno folklora naše zemlje, ali i cijele regije.

Sporazum je zapravo temelj za osnivanje budućeg Instituta za folklor jugoistočne Europe, za što se Institut posebno zalagaže, a sve to u suradnji s FA Linđo, kako bi se mogao organizirati koncert posvećen promociji folklora za vrijeme međunarodne konferencije u Zagrebu, koja će se održati u rujnu ove godine.

FA Linđo i Međunarodni institut za promidžbu mira kroz turizam potpisivanjem ovgo sporazuma obvezali su se na međusobnu potporu u inicijativama i aktivnostima koje obogaćuju kulturu, vrednuju baštinu i promoviraju mir, rade na obnavljanju kulturnih veza u regiji jugoistočne Europe, pridonose pomirbi posljedica ratnih sukoba, promoviraju suradnju između turizma i kulturnih područja u jugoistočnoj Europi te pridonose održivom razvoju u regiji jugoistočne Europe putem turizma i kulture.

"Crisis and Innovation in Modern Greece"

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University announces our fourth International Graduate Student Conference in Modern Greek Studies.

Submissions are invited from doctoral candidates at the final stages of their dissertation work. We seek proposals for papers that explore the interplay between moments of crisis and processes of innovation in modern Greece. Our primary aim is to discuss these two concepts, to explore their relationship and indicate their role in Greek social, political, and cultural life from the early modern period to the present. Possible research areas include institutions, policies, practices, discourses, and identities. We welcome submissions from various disciplines, such as anthropology, art history, film studies, economics, history, literary criticism, political science, and sociology. Comparative or interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Papers should be in English, and must not exceed 30 minutes.

Please submit abstracts of approximately 350 words no later than February 3, 2012. All Greek words should be transliterated. Each abstract should be accompanied by a cover letter, including (i) a curriculum vitae; (ii) a brief statement how the proposed paper connects with the dissertation-in-progress; (iii) the applicant's contact details (name, current affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses; tel. nos.); (iv) the names and e-mail addresses of two academic referees, including the dissertation supervisor and one other person familiar with the candidate's current research.

Receipt of all submissions will be acknowledged. The applicants will be notified by February 24, 2012, whether their submissions have been accepted. Participants will be expected to submit the full text of their papers by April 13, 2012. Papers will be precirculated among conference speakers, chairs, and respondents.

The Center for Hellenic Studies will cover participants' travel expenses to Princeton, and will offer shared (double-occupancy) accommodation (up to four nights), as well as some meals on the days of the conference.

U Dance Centre- u, u Vancouveru, od. 2 do 4. veljače, plesna umjetnica i koreografkinja Andrea Božić predstavit će se predstavama 'After Trio A' i 'Beginning'.

Predstava 'Beginning' je dijalog između prostoručnog crtanja suradnice Julije Willims i Andrejinog tijela u pokretu. Sve počinje s bijelom, praznom stranicom papira i s pitanjem: Od kuda počinjemo?

Predstava je dio triptiha Beginning Middle End kojeg su zajedno kreirali troje umjetnika, po narudžbi, Springdance festivala, nizozemskog plesnog festivala, 2009. godine. Umjetnici su: Madalina Dan (Rumunjska), Michael Pinchbeck (Velika Britanija) te Andrea Božić (Hrvatska/Nizozemska). Madalina, Michael i Andrea susreli su se po prvi puta tijekom „Dijaloga“, programa u okviru Springdance festivala 2008. godine. Tada su odlučili zajednički kreirati predstavu o početku, sredini i kraju. Za Početak (Beginning), Andrea je suradnika našla u Juliji Willms s kojom surađuje dugi niz godina.
 
After Trio A se temelji na minimalističkoj koreografiji autorice Yvonne Rainer naziva: Trio A (1996.) te na djelu No Manifesto (1965.). Trio A ples reducira na čiste esencijalne elemente te se smatra početkom postmodernog plesa. Izvorno je koreografija bila dio cjelovečernjeg program pod nazivom The Mind Is A Muscle. Rainer je izokrenula tada ustaljene konvencije u području plesa kao i tadašnju percepciju tijela izjavom 'ples je teško vidljiv'. After Trio A narudžba je projekta Cover#2 koji se osvrće na dio plesne povijesti. Ova predstava nije ponovno prikazivanje izvornog djela naziva Trio A, već je to dijalog s tim djelom: djelo o transferu znanja i o sjećanju.

Andrea Božić je koreografkinja koja danas živi i radi u Amsterdamu, Nizozemska. Porijeklom je iz Hrvatske gdje je studirala suvremeni ples te diplomirala na Filozofskom Fakultetu komparativnu književnost i engleski. Jedno je vrijeme bila suradnica Hrvatskog instituta za pokret i ples gdje je obavljala funkciju programskog koordinatora te sudjelovala u projektu MAPAZ (Moving Academy for Performing Arts Zagreb). U Nizozemskoj je 1999. godine diplomirala suvremeni ples na School for New Dance Development, a potom 2004. pri Dance Unlimited (danas Amsterdam Masters of Choreography). Bavi se interdisciplinarnim radom, a od 2005. godine surađuje s video umjetnicom Juliom Willms i sa skladateljem Robertom Pravdom.

vrijeme: 05.02.2012. u 18 sati Urednik i pisac Stjepo Martinović gost je nedjeljnog talk showa Kava i kolači Ivice Prtenjače. Susret se održava 5. veljače, u zagrebačkoj Knjižnici i čitaonici Bogdana Ogrizovića, s početkom u 18 sati. Gost će govoriti o fenomenu skandinavskih krimića - Mons Kallentoft, Zima (Samoća-Obred-Zlo), autora petog naslova serije romana kojih je središnji lik policijska inspektorica Malin Fors, a koji ističe da stvara 'prozu misterija na uvjerljivoj pozadini društvene stvarnosti', najavljuje KGZ.
